Essential Mamad Equipment
A prepared mamad is an equipped mamad. Concrete walls and a steel door are not enough — without the right equipment, the room cannot provide its full protective capability. According to Home Front Command data, only about 60% of mamads in Israel are properly equipped.
This guide details everything that should be in your mamad, organized by category.
NBC Filtration System
The filtration system is the core of the mamad’s defense against chemical, biological, and nuclear threats.
Components
- NBC filter — a military-grade filter connected to the mamad’s ventilation port. Filter lifespan: 5-10 years (check the expiration date)
- Manual blower — for drawing air through the filter when there is no electricity
- Electric blower (optional) — provides continuous airflow
Estimated Costs
| Item | Estimated Price |
|---|---|
| New NBC filter | 800-1,500 NIS (~$220-410) |
| Manual blower | 200-400 NIS (~$55-110) |
| Electric blower | 1,500-3,000 NIS (~$410-820) |
Per Israeli Standard 4910, every mamad must include a connection point for a filtration system. If you do not have a filter, this is the first investment to make.
Sealing Kit
The sealing kit ensures the mamad is completely airtight against hazardous materials.
Contents
- Wide adhesive tape (duct tape) — 3-4 rolls for sealing the window, door, and openings
- Thick plastic sheeting — to cover the window if the glass cracks
- Replacement rubber gaskets — for the mamad door (they degrade over time)
- Bolt wrench — for closing the door bolts
Check your sealing kit at least once a year. Rubber gaskets dry out and lose effectiveness after 5-7 years.
Water and Food
The Home Front Command recommends preparing for 72 hours of shelter stay.
Water
- 4 liters per person per day — for drinking and basic hygiene
- For a family of 4: 48 liters (twelve 4-liter bottles)
- Replace the water every 6 months
Food
- Canned goods (tuna, corn, beans) — shelf life of 2-3 years
- Energy bars and dried fruits
- Crackers and food that requires no cooking
- Baby food and formula — if applicable
Utensils

- Garbage bags
