What is Tzeva Adom?

Tzeva Adom (Hebrew for “Red Color”) is Israel’s national early warning system for incoming aerial threats — rockets, missiles, UAVs, and anti-tank missiles. The system is operated by the Home Front Command (Pikud HaOref) and broadcasts real-time alerts to every threatened area.

When radar systems detect a launch toward Israeli territory, the system calculates the projected impact zone within seconds and activates sirens only in the relevant areas. Simultaneously, alerts are pushed through the Home Front Command app, television, radio, and Telegram channels.

How the System Works

  1. Detection — advanced radar systems detect a rocket or missile launch
  2. Calculation — a computerized system calculates the missile trajectory and expected impact zone within 1-3 seconds
  3. Alert — sirens are activated in threatened areas, and digital alerts are sent simultaneously
  4. Shelter — residents enter their protected space according to the warning time for their zone
  5. Wait — remain in the protected space for 10 minutes from the last alert, unless the Home Front Command instructs otherwise

Warning Times by Region

The time you have from the siren to reaching shelter varies by distance from the border:

ZoneWarning TimeExamples
Gaza Envelope15 secondsSderot, Nir Am, Kfar Aza
0-20 km from border30 secondsAshkelon, Netivot
20-40 km45 secondsAshdod, Kiryat Gat
40-80 km60 secondsBeer Sheva, Rehovot
Central Israel90 secondsTel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Petah Tikva
Far north30 secondsKiryat Shmona, Metula
Haifa and Krayot60 secondsHaifa, Acre

In areas with only 15 seconds of warning, a mamad is the only viable option. There is no time to reach a public shelter.

What to Do When You Hear a Siren

  1. Enter a protected space — mamad, mamak, or public shelter. Close the steel door and window shutter
  2. If outdoors — enter the nearest building. If no building is available, lie on the ground and cover your head with your hands
  3. If in a vehicle — stop at the side of the road, exit the vehicle, and lie on the ground as far as possible from the car
  4. Wait 10 minutes — do not leave the protected space until 10 minutes have passed since the last siren
  5. Follow instructions — listen to the radio or check the Home Front Command app for updates

Types of Sirens

  • Rising and falling tone — warning of incoming rockets or missiles. Enter a protected space immediately
  • Continuous steady tone — chemical or biological threat alert. Enter a protected space and seal all doors and windows
  • Short blast — all clear. You may leave the protected space

How to Receive Real-Time Alerts

  • Home Front Command app — the official app, available on iOS and Android
  • Telegram channels — Red Alert Israel and Tzeva Adom channels on Telegram
  • IDF Radio (Galei Tzahal) and Reshet Bet — live broadcasts during events
  • Television — all channels switch to live coverage during escalations

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the system cover the entire country? Yes, the Tzeva Adom system covers all of Israel. Every community has a defined warning time based on its distance from the border.

What if the siren does not work? This is why it is important to install the Home Front Command app. The app sends alerts even when sirens are not audible, for example if you are inside a soundproofed building.

How accurate is the system? The system achieves very high accuracy, but occasional false alerts occur. It is always better to enter a protected space for every alert — the risk of ignoring an alert far outweighs the inconvenience.
